“TRON:Legacy" movie brings video game world to life

SAN DIEGO - Back in 1982, first-time director Steven Lisberger brought mainstream audiences into the world of videogames with the sci-fi thriller "TRON", using early computer-generated imagery that paved the way for today's 3D movie blockbusters.
Now the long-awaited sequel "TRON:Legacy", out in December from Walt Disney Pictures, is poised to push 3D technology and digital performance capture a step further.
"TRON: Legacy" finds the son of videogame developer Kevin Flynn being pulled into the digital world that has trapped his father for 20 years.
Director Joe Kasinski took the technology that was introduced in the backward aging 2008 movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" to create a completely virtual human character, Clu, played by Jeff Bridges who was also the star of the original "TRON".
"One of the big technological leaps we're trying to take with this film is in our villain, Clu, who is played by Jeff Bridges, but he looks like Jeff Bridges did in 1982," Kasinki said.
"Jeff is driving his performance, but he is a digital character," Kasinski told thousands of fans at the annual Comic Con convention this week.
Bridges said one of the things that had always bothered him as an actor was that, before now, a different actor would be cast to play a younger version of a character in the same film.
"Now you can play yourself at different ages, whether it's a younger version of yourself or an older version of yourself, digitally," said Bridges.
In many ways, filmmakers found that making the new "TRON" movie was helped by the kind of technology that was introduced as science fiction in the original film.
"The irony here is that 28 years ago we were trying to figure out how we were going to get Jeff Bridge's character into cyber space, and I made up this crazy idea that he gets scanned by a laser and ends up on the game grid," said Lisberger, who directed "TRON" in 1982.
"Now, we're making 'TRON: Legacy' and they scan Jeff with a laser in real-time and boom, he pops up."
Even the 3D technology powering the film, that was developed by James Cameron and Vince Pace for "Avatar," has received an upgrade through new cameras that hit the market right before filming began.
Kasinski said the end result will be a 3D experience that immerses audiences even deeper in the on-screen action.
"TRON: Legacy" is set within the world of video games and, of course, audiences will be able to learn about some of the happenings within this universe through a new video game prequel from Disney Interactive Studios.
"TRON Evolution," which will ship just before the movie opens, will feature actors from the movie and serve as a bridge between the two films. The game will be available in stereoscopic 3D on PC and PlayStation 3.
Lisberger said that the fact that Disney is releasing a film sequel after 28 years connects to a line from Bridge's character in the original film: "You just keep doing what you think is right and hope it works out in the end."
Actor Bruce Boxleitner said he believes there are more "TRON" stories to be told, should audiences embrace the new film.
Based on the reception of fan boys at Comic Con this week, the odds are good that fans won't be waiting another 28 years for a third installment.

Justin Bieber: Coming to CSI!

Forget Crime Scene Investigation.
For at least a couple episodes of the 2010/2011 television season, CSI will stand for Cute Stuff Incorporated.
That's because Justin Bieber will make his acting debut on the September 23 premiere of this CBS drama, portraying a troubled teen who crosses paths with the main characters due to problems he's having with his brother.
Producers say it will be a recurring role, meaning Bieber's character will show up again later in the season. Commence screams of shock and joy, gals!

CSI producers are clearly excited about tapping into a new audience with this casting coup. They said in a joint statement:

"Every 20 years, a phenomenon like Justin Bieber graces our world. We’d like to believe that the phenomenon of CSI has had the same impact on popular culture. The opportunity to bring them together in the premiere is a great treat for our audience and all of its new viewers. This will be true event television. We’re looking forward to Justin’s dramatic star turn, not only in the premiere, but in a continuing seasonal arc.”

In March 2009, Taylor Swift guest-starred on the series. She played a country singer named Haley Jones.

Kim Kardashian says her nephew is “the best birth control ever”

The reality TV star loves being an aunt to seven-month-old nephew Mason – her sister Kourtney’s son – but admits it’s put her off having children because she’s seen how hard it is to be a parent.

When asked if she would like children by Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show, Kim replied: “Let’s just say that Mason is the best birth control ever! I am definitely happy to wait a few years.”

Earlier this year, Kim split from her NFL footballer boyfriend Reggie Bush and while she has been linked to Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin, she insists she is currently single.

Kim said: “I’m single and having a good time. I am living my life and there’s nothing I want to tell you.

“I’m meeting some really amazing people and just trying to live my life, and I am definitely a lot more private than I was before.”

Speaking shortly after she split from Reggie, Kim – who was also romantically linked with soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo – admitted she is looking for a husband.

She said: ‘I’m on the market. This is a new life for me. I haven’t been single in years. I never thought I would like being single. I’m not the dating type. I’m a relationship kind of girl. The next one that comes into my life will be my husband.’ “

Lindsay Lohan Jail Update: Living Among Murderers, Visited By Family, May Get Sprung Early

Lindsay Lohan's fellow Lynwood Correctional Facility inmates give Mean Girls a whole new meaning. Most of the women housed near LiLo are killers.
As in people actually doing time for murder.
Lohan expressed fears of being housed with these inmates since being thrown in jail two days ago, but has not received any special treatment yet.
She did enjoy some slightly less reprehensible company yesterday, though, when she was paid a visit by her mother, Dina, and her little sister Ali.
'Tears were shed,' a source close to the family said. 'The visit was very emotional, but Lindsay's spirits were lifted, seeing her mom and sister.'
As for Michael Lohan? He may join her in prison.

SPRUNG: If Lindsay behaves, like she has so far, she'll be out quickly.

Visiting hours at the jail are typically limited to weekends, but in this case, the troubled actress was allowed an exception - for security reasons.
'Lindsay might receive visitors after official visiting hours are over for security reasons,' a jail official said. 'It's for the safety of everyone.'
Meanwhile, Lohan has been serving out her 90-day sentence - which is expected to be reduced to just 14 days due to overcrowding - in peace.
She's 'cool, calm and sleeping a lot,' says a source. 'She's not a mess at all. She's keeping to herself ... and really handling it pretty good.'
She may not have to handle it much longer, either. Says her attorney:
“It's our expectation that Ms. Lohan will get additional time credit from her earlier times in custody and that would reduce her time in jail."
Lindsay was expected to be released on August 1, or after two weeks, but according to Shawn Chapman Holley, she may be sprung sooner.
Judge Marsha Revel will decide how much time credit Lohan will receive and then send a minute order over to the L.A. Sheriff's Department.

Kristina Hagan Sues David Boreanaz For Sexual Harassment, Attempted Boning

As we reported yesterday, actor and sex scandal magnet David Boreanaz is being sued by an actress who claims he harassed her during filming of his show, Bones.
The woman, Kristina Hagan, has now been identified.
Filed by Gloria Allred, the sexual harassment lawsuit claims the misconduct began during filming in August 2009, with 'sexually inappropriate text messages.'
Kristina Hagan was an extra on the Fox show at the time, and developed some sort of relationship with David Boreanaz - it's not clear if it was physical at all.
But the suit claims Boreanaz was driving with Kristina in September, 2009 and told her he was 'the boss' and that he could 'make things happen for her.'
According to the lawsuit, Boreanaz continually told Hagan he was trying to find a role for her, but never delivered. That's when it really gets good/bad ...

Kristina Hagan is the latest woman tied to the actor.

The suit claims David then parked his car, and 'attempted to kiss her and touch her breasts but she pushed him away.' The suit then alleges Boreanaz 'unzipped his pants, pulled out his penis and began stroking it until he ejaculated.'
Another encounter allegedly occurred with Hagan in David's trailer on September 29 of last year, according to court documents. Once again Hagan claims Boreanaz grabbed, kissed, and fondled her - and then 'masturbated in front of her.'
Then the suit claims that in October, Boreanaz, who famously had an affair with Rachel Uchitel, told Hagan 'he and his wife had argued because there were reports of his infidelity' coming out - and that he and Hagan would have to 'cool it.'
Kristina is also suing Fox and Bones' production company for failing to take corrective action against Boreanaz. The actor's rep told TMZ in a statement:
'The allegations concerning any alleged inappropriate conduct by David Boreanaz are totally fabricated and absurd. There is no validity to this lawsuit.'

Just when you think there can't possibly be another sex scandal involving David Boreanaz, he takes a cute extra for a ride in the car and begins going to town on himself.

A former Batman has some high praise for the franchise's current director.
"He's unbelievably great," Michael Keaton told Access Hollywood of Christopher Nolan, director of "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight." "He's the one who got it... he got it and he took it to a whole other level."

The star, who sat down on Saturday with Access at the junket for this summer's "The Other Guys," in which he'll join funnymen Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, said he appreciated the franchise's current darker tone.
"That general direction was always where I thought that character and the story could go," Michael, who starred in Tim Burton's "Batman" and "Batman Returns," said. "He just did it brilliantly... That Heath Ledger performance [in 'The Dark Knight'] is unbelievable."

However, he said his latest film, a cop buddy comedy about a pair of bumbling detectives, brings the laughs instead.
"There was so much laughing on the set, it's kind of ridiculous," Michael said. "The job is doing every scene with a straight face and not losing it."
"The Other Guys" is due in theaters on August 6, 2010.

LOS ANGELES - Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan's "Inception" is anything but a sleeper as the thriller opened big with $60.4 million and a No. 1 finish at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Warner Bros. action tale about a team that sneaks into people's dreams is DiCaprio's biggest opening weekend, topping his previous best of $41.1 million for last winter's "Shutter Island."
"Inception" falls far short of director Christopher Nolan's best, though. Nolan is the man who directed the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight," which opened over the same weekend two years ago with a record $158.4 million.
Warner Bros. has carved out a niche with this particular mid-July weekend. The studio followed "The Dark Knight" with a $77.8 million opening for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" over the same weekend last year.
"We like this spot. Not to sound superstitious, but stay away from this weekend. I own it," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros.
The final "Harry Potter" movie debuts on the same weekend next summer. Warner plans to open Nolan's third "Batman" movie over that weekend two years from now, though Fellman said the studio could move it to an earlier date that summer.
Strong reviews helped "Inception," which stars DiCaprio as leader of a team that normally breaks into people's dreams to steal their secrets but now has been hired to do the opposite — plant an idea in a wealthy heir's subconscious.
Slipping to second place with $32.7 million was the previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Steve Carell's animated hit "Despicable Me." The Universal release raised its 10-day total to $118.4 million.
Disney's family adventure "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was a dud, opening at No. 3 with $17.4 million, lifting its total to $24.5 million since premiering Wednesday.
"It's disappointing to say the least," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which had high hopes for the movie. "I'm perplexed. I have no response, because I honestly don't know what went wrong."
The movie reunites the team behind the hit "National Treasure" movies — Nicolas Cage, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub — for an action comedy about an ancient wizard training an awkward apprentice (Jay Baruchel) to take down an evil sorceress in modern Manhattan.
Bruckheimer has been a blockbuster producer for Disney with such hits as "The Rock," "Armageddon" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.
But "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" was the summer's second Disney-Bruckheimer production to come up short at the domestic box office, following "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which was unable to crack the $100 million mark.
"Jerry's working on 'Pirates 4' as we speak," Viane said of the Johnny Depp sequel due out next summer. "I'll go to bat with Jerry any day, because his track record is pretty darn good."
With "Inception" and "Despicable Me," the weekend marked a rare instance when two original stories — not sequels, spinoffs or adaptations of comic books, best-sellers or other properties — led the box office.
Hollywood relies on familiar titles such as "Iron Man 2," "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Toy Story 3" for most of its big summer releases, though the occasional fresh idea manages to score with audiences.
"We let all of the sequels and popcorn films come out and get the summer rolling, then we come in here with this original concept," Fellman said of "Inception." "We're in a good place to run now for the rest of the summer."
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

A Brazilian model living in Houston, Tex. who has the largest breasts in the world, is in the fight for her life, myFOXhouston.com reported Tuesday.
After more than 30 plastic surgeries, Sheyla Hershey suffered her first complication following her most recent breast augmentation procedure in June when a severe staph infection reached both of Hershey's breasts.

Doctors took 30-year-old Hershey into surgery Tuesday morning to remove the implants, and possibly her own breasts.
Hershey said her surgeon is concerned that the infection could leak into her bloodstream, which could threaten her life.
"I had large fever and painful. I just couldn't breathe properly; it was terrible! I was in bed all day, couldn't get up," said Hershey.
In 2009, Hershey was reported to be a size 38KKK and was awarded with the Brazilian equivalent of the Guinness Book of World Records award.
Her website notes that she is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and English.
